J. N. “Ding” Darling – National Wildlife Refuge
Wildlife Drive is the first wildlife experience people have on Sanibel Island. You drive on top of dikes created to assist with mosquito control. The road leads past tidal mudflats, mangrove forests and further on through a tropical forest atop an old Calusa Indian Shell Mound. A walking trail takes you around the mound itself.
Do not let the sleeping alligator fool you – It may not be as asleep as you think!

The Sanibel Stoop – Here the Calusa Indians harvested shells for food and used the emptied shells for tools and weapons. The Stoop – is continued, but today we pick the shells for their beauty.
